Jansen: risk of recidivism

 “A new construction industry trend: larger police districts demand bigger police stations”

Quite a few regions have seen large police districts being created, where the police forces from different municipalities unite their forces. Now, the infrastructures are being updated: the police officers are leaving their local offices for modern, regional headquarters. Yesterday, there was the presentation of the ingenious police station of the VLAS Drie Hofsteden police district in Courtrai. This project has been realized using a ‘Design Build Maintenance’ formula – together with architect Goedefroo + Goedefroo, DBG, consultancy agency Istema and building entrepreneur Stadsbader. This is the first time Group Jansen builds a police station. “But we are planning on recidivating”, says CEO Nadia Jansen with a smile.

Building a police station means you must respect specific regulations. It’s not an everyday contract, says Nadia Jansen (CEO Group Jansen): “The citizen enters the building in a beautiful and functional reception hall. But there are obviously also less accessible spaces such as a magazine and armoury or the 12 interrogation rooms, where 140 kilograms of heavy acoustic doors ensure the discretion of the investigation.

The cellblock is completely in line with the latest standards on discretion and assistance: “It is possible to organize a line-up, an audio-visual interrogation, a confidential conversation with a counsel, a Salduz interrogation, a medical examination… Since the detainees also have the right to a minimum of comfort, there is enough room, hygiene, sanitary facilities and ventilation. Finally, the ceilings, walls and floors are resistant to vandalism.” 

The building translates three objectives of the new VLAS vision

The police station extends over 10.000 m2, divided in three levels. From here, the police watches over Courtrai, Kuurne and Lendelede. The fitting-out translates the VLAS police district’s vision: 

  • In order to be customer-oriented and professional, teamwork is essential. That’s why walls between different departments have disappeared: community police, social police, local criminal investigation, intervention teams... are now all housed in one large, beautiful and comfortable space. 
  • Furthermore, the whole building has been designed from an efficiency point of view. Thanks to the strategic position and the central service vehicles parking lot, no time is lost in interventions. Moreover, the room for internal dispatching and monitoring of the camera network is separated, so that those colleagues can focus at work.

People that have been in a cell, would prefer never to return there. In this case though, Jansen really is planning on ‘recidivating’, says Nadia with a wink: “This is the first time we ever built a police station and we are already looking forward to similar jobs. As a finishing firm, we were able to leave a personal mark on this project. By using glass walls, we created lots of space and light. For the fitting-out, we used our own products like climate ceilings, walls, raised floors and furniture from our own joiner’s workshop. This resulted in a low energy level (E41) and solid isolation (factor K24). On the other hand, the walls and ceilings make it possible to rearrange the spaces – if the needs should someday change – and the building can even be extended by adding a fourth level of 2000m².

Finally, this project has been realized using a DBM-formula (‘Design, Build and Maintenance’). “This means that Group Jansen has been at the table from the design phase on and worked in the building team with architect Goedefroo + Goedefroo, architecture and engineering firm DBG, consultancy agency Istema and building entrepreneur Stadsbader. But it also means that Jansen Services will be responsible for maintenance until 20 years after the end of the works”, concludes Lowist, COO Building Group Jansen.
